According to Iain Lang, the lead researcher on the team, smokers may feel pleasure when they light up. But that’s because they’re feeding their addiction. Overall, they’re not any happier than nonsmokers. In fact, they’re less so.

Every year, approximately 110 non-smokers in British Columbia die from diseases brought on by second-hand smoke (sometimes called environmental tobacco smoke or “ETS”). Thousands more become sick.
Second-hand smoke consists of mainstream smoke, the smoke inhaled and exhaled by the smoker, and side stream smoke, the smoke released directly from the end of a burning cigarette.
Smoke does a lot of damage – and not just to smokers. Anyone who’s near a lit cigarette, pipe or cigar is probably breathing second-hand smoke. Two-thirds of the smoke from a burning cigarette is not inhaled by the smoker but enters the surrounding environment. The contaminated air is inhaled by anyone in that area.

A new study shows that while smoking bans in public places such as bars and restaurants has effectively lowered health risks in those locations, it has lead to more parents smoking in private at home. This in turn often puts small children at a higher risk as their exposure to smoking increases. Previous research has not found the same risk, instead showing that smoke free legislation contributes to reduced smoking at home. Clearly, the best option is to quit smoking altogether rather than shifting where and when one can smoke.

A new report in the journal of Science points to a small area deep in the brain, called the insula, that may control smoking behaviour. The insula seems to be where the brain turns physical reactions into feelings, such as feeling anxious when your heart speeds up. When this part of the brain is damaged (for example, through stroke) people stop smoking easily. Of course, with the Rowshan Method, you can stop smoking easily (no brain damage needed!).
